A Drug Free Zone

About Us

DFH was organized as a community coalition in 2003 due to increasing rates of youth substance abuse.

As approved by the Board of Directors in 2008, our mission is to organize, inform, educate, and unite our community in its efforts to reduce substance abuse.

In 2010, DFH shifted its focus towards prevention strategies, including providing information, social marketing campaigns, community prevention events, offering training to members of our community, as well as mobilizing law enforcement to do compliance checks, and enforce existing laws, policies, and procedures.

The coalition seeks to change the environment in which substance use happens by creating awareness and conversation (MEDIA) on the issue of substance use, providing and coordinating prevention services (SERVICES PROVIDED) in the community, mobilizing resources (RESOURCES GENERATED) for substance use prevention and creating lasting change (COMMUNITY CHANGE) in our community. Join the conversation or stay updated by reading our blog.

Drug Free Highlands has been fortunate enough to support and provide initiatives that have now become staples of the Highlands County community and beyond. You may have attended one in the past and didn’t realize it at the time but almost everything local that DFH puts on is reoccurring; BACKCHAT, the NOPE Candlelight Vigil, our Coalition Workshop and Operation Medicine Cabinet are all events that take place around the same time every year. You can always attend one of our pop-up parties and others events hosted by partner agencies.

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program.
SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program that has been found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, plus alcohol and drug abuse in children. In addition, SFP improves social competencies and school performance. For more information call 863.382.2138 or email Jackie Rawlings of Tri County Human Services at jrawlings@tchsonline.org.

Red Carpet Events

In 2017, however, the coalition did some self assessing which lead to changes for our coalition. At the beginning of the year, Red Carpet Event discussions bubbled … “To be or not to be?” As internal changes took effect, genius struck! Acting Out was onboard to make magic and all was settled, until funding became a serious concern. One word: Telethon; And the rest became clear. Soon plans were underway to decode an ancient technique known only to the few who viewed mainstream television when land lines and phone calls were extremely popular.
Now on course for an extravagant night filled with fantastic people and special moments provided by Acting Out and area talent, The Red Carpet Telethon combines past sentiments of days spent watching shows as a family while supporting a cause along the way. February 3rd, 2018 is the date to save and we can’t wait to see you there.
